Bahram Javidi – Short Biography
Prof. Bahram Javidi is Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor at University of Connecticut, the highest rank and honor bestowed on faculty by UConn, based on research, teaching, and service. His interests are in a broad range of transformative imaging approaches using optics and photonics, and he has made seminal contributions to passive and active multi-dimensional imaging from nano to micro and macro scales. His recent research activities include digital holography, polarimetric 3D imaging at low light, 3D visualization and recognition of objects in photon-starved environments; automated disease identification using biophotonics with compact digital holographic sensors for use in developing countries; optical information security, encryption, and authentication; non-planar flexible 3D image sensing, and bio-inspired imaging. He has 35 patents some of which have been licensed by industry. His lab and projects have been supported by government and industries including NSF, DARPA, AFOSR, ONR, Army, AFRL, Lockheed Martin, Samsung, Nikon, Honeywell, Canon, Hamamatsu, Comcast, and ETRI.
Prof. Javidi’s research has been recognized by awards and prizes from major scientific societies. He has been awarded The Optica (a.k.a. OSA) Emmett Leith medal (2021), Optica C. E. K. Mees Medal (2019); The IEEE Photonics Society William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award (2019); The Optica Joseph Fraunhofer Award / Robert M. Burley Prize (2018); and the European Physical Society (EPS) Prize for Applied Aspects of Quantum Electronics and Optics (2015). He was awarded the IEEE Donald G. Fink Paper Prize (2008), chosen from among all, that is over 130 IEEE transactions, journals, and magazines; the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellow Award (2008); the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Prize (2007); the SPIE Technology Achievement Award (2008); and the SPIE Dennis Gabor Award in Diffractive Wave Technologies (2005). He was named an IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturer in 2004 and 2005; and was the 2010 recipient of the George Washington University’s Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award, the university’s highest honor for its alumni in all disciplines. He has been named Fellow of 8 societies, including IEEE, Optica, AAAS, SPIE, American Inst. for Medical & Biological Eng., European Optical Society, National Academy of Inventors, and Institute of Physics.
Prof. Javidi is an alumnus of the Frontiers of Engineering of National Academy of Engineering since 2003. Early in his career, the National Science Foundation (USA) named him a Presidential Young Investigator; and he received the Engineering Foundation and IEEE Faculty Initiation Awards.
Prof. Javidi has over 1100 publications (9 books, 58 book chapters, 580 journal articles, 540 conference proceedings), with over 250 plenaries, keynotes, and invited conference papers. He has been recognized by 9 best paper awards. Some of his journal papers are among the top 10 most cited in the field, have been the top journal downloads, and have been the subject of press releases by Optica (a.k.a. OSA), IEEE, NSF, and SPIE. His publications have been cited 44500 times (h-index=106) according to Google Scholar.
The Stanford University’s Standardized Citation Indicators (PLoS Biol 18(10): e3000918, 2020) ranks him 23 among 56325 international scientists in Optics, and 3804 among the top 186,178 scientists in the world in all disciplines (several millions scientists were evaluated in this study). He has supervised 170 Master’s and PhD students, post-doctoral students, and visiting professors. He is a strong believer in international scientific exchange and collaboration, and has co-authored publications with over 350 different students, scientists, and engineers from Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America, N. Africa, and Middle East.
Prof. Javidi has served on the Editorial Boards of the Proceedings of the IEEE Journal (ranked #1 among all electrical engineering journals with impact factor of 9.1); The IEEE Access Journal (Impact Factor=3.9), the Founding Editorial Board of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Display Technology; Optical Engineering Journal, and the IEEE Photonics Journal (impact factor of 2.25). In 2008-2011, he was elected by the members to serve on the Board of Directors of the SPIE. He is the founding chair of several conferences in optics & photonics sponsored by OSA, IEEE, and SPIE, and has chaired over 75 international conferences. His papers have appeared in Proceedings of the IEEE Journal, Journal of the Royal Society, Physics Today, Advances in Optics and Photonics, and Nature. His research has been cited in Nature Physics, IEEE Spectrum, Science, New Scientist, OE Magazine, SPIE Newsroom, OPN Magazine, IEEE Photonics, NASA, and National Science Foundation Newsletters. He was named an SPIE Luminary in 2021. He received the BS degree from George Washington University, and MS & PhD degrees from The Pennsylvania State University. Prof. Javidi is ranked #55 (in the USA) and #92 (in the world) among Best Scientists in Electronics and Electrical Engineering for 2023 according to Research.com.
